Work to improve the Victoria Line

The busy Victoria line is a vital artery; half a million people use the line to travel across central London and right up to Walthamstow quickly each week day.

The line was completed in 1971 and, unsurprisingly, it's time for an upgrade to meet the increasing demands of a 21st century city. Part of the upgrade programme involved the recent early evening closures, which have now concluded for this year. London Underground used this time to successfully start testing the first of the new Victoria line trains. In addition, up to 1,000 people worked on the signalling replacement programme each night.

Victoria line passengers may also have noticed the benefits of a new control system being installed on the existing trains. This new technology will provide more even acceleration and braking, making journeys much smoother. This system will be in place across the fleet by the end of January.

The upgrade will mean quicker journey times for passengers by operating a faster, more reliable and more frequent service - with 33 trains an hour compared to the current 27 trains. The new fleet of 47 trains will offer improved ventilation, electronic travel information displays and extra space for passengers, luggage, wheelchairs and buggies. The first of these new trains will be in service by late 2008.

Victoria line upgrade work will continue and London Underground advises passengers to continue to check before they travel via www.tfl.gov.uk.
