Haringey celebrates the best in the business

The achievements of businesses across Haringey were officially recognised at a lavish awards ceremony attended by more than 400 business representatives, residents and politicians last night (8 March 2007).

A fashion company, a forklift truck supplier and an Arabic tuition centre were among 10 varied businesses picking up gongs at the Haringey City Growth Business Awards, staged by Haringey Council and co-sponsored by North London Ltd and Collage Arts.

The awards, held at Decorium in Wood Green, were introduced by the Leader of the Council Cllr George Meehan and hosted by BBC business presenter Declan Curry.

Cllr Meehan said: “These awards are a clear demonstration of Haringey’s growing reputation as a great place to do business. I am delighted we have so many people here tonight from such a wide variety of companies and organisations.

“We as a Council are committed to doing all we can to support our local businesses. The Haringey City Growth Business Awards are our way of thanking them for the huge contribution they make to this borough.”  

Residents and companies submitted more than 400 nominations for the awards, which are now in their second year and aim to .

Declan Curry said: “Enterprise is essential to our economic success and it is right that we should celebrate the success of anyone who starts up their own business.”

Metifa Weekes, who won Best Entrepreneur, said: “It’s a delight to be recognised in the borough where I was born and where I know the community so well. It’s an honour to receive this award.”

It collects unwanted equipment from clients all over the UK before recycling it or securing its re-use. Established in July 2005, Nazali is the first organisation to teach the Arabic language in Haringey. Classes are held at Park View Academy/West Green Learning Centre, CONEL (College of North East London) and Wisdom School. As well as teaching Arabic, the company brings together the local community closer by offering activities for children and evening classes for adults. Based at the Tudor Leaf Business Centre, Tottenham, it currently employs 10 people to deal with a student list that has grown from five to 110 students in just two years.
