The centrepiece of the plans, approved on Monday, is a 10,000 square metre, three-storey extension to the north to house a branch of Debenhams.
On the west of the site, off Mayes Road, the plans are for a smaller two-storey shopping extension and a service yard on the former Jet petrol station site. But residents' groups have expressed concerns about the plans.
Andrew Vout, chairman of Avenue Gardens Residents Association, said afterwards: "Yes, it would be great if Debenhams came but not at the cost of having another awful building in Wood Green and this building doesn't cut it."
There were a number of objections on "points of detail". They included the state and security of the High Road to Caxton Road alleyway that will run alongside Debenhams, the lack of a High Road entrance to the store and the anticipated "ugliness" of the new service yard.
The plans were approved despite an Environment Agency threat to refer the application to the Government over fears about the nearness of the proposed building to the Moselle brook culvert.
The council's planning team leader, insisted there was no risk.
