Muswell Hill business shortlisted for Gary Rhodes’ Local Food Hero 2007!
Following months of campaigning, the all important votes have been counted, the experts have had their say and the top five people battling it out to be London’s Food Hero have been shortlisted. The winner of the London’s crown will secure a place in the grand final with the chance to win £40,000 and claim the title of UKTV Local Food Hero 2007.
UKTV Local Food Hero 2007 is the culmination of a nationwide search to discover Britain’s ultimate food champion. The awards are a tribute to everyone who tirelessly puts great British produce onto plates, into shops and markets, and on pub and restaurant tables.
Each region of the country will have its own episode, where the region’s top five have been whittled down from the thousands of nominations, chosen through a combination of public votes and the panel of judges.
Out of the five London nominees, Walter Purkis from Muswell Hill was included, a family run fish mongers from North London who have two local shops serving fresh seafood. Walter is a fishmonger with a real drive to find fresh fish that is as local as possible. There is a large range of wet fish, such as skate, sword fish, seasonally available wild Scottish salmon, whitebait, cod, and haddock, to name but a few. His passion to source fresh fish can be seen through his involvement with a range of fish and poultry associations.
The winner of the London region will go through to the nail-biting national final. Joining the other 9 finalists, the London winner will battle it out for the honour of being crowned UKTV Food’s Hero 2007 and winning the highly coveted prize of £40,000 to invest back into their business.

North London has a prominent food and drink sector with many successful businesses in the area, last year we had another local bakery in Haringey named one of the 100 must-see shops in the world. We wish Walter Purkis well in their business and hope they make it through the finals and win the title.”
